The Department of Visual Communication Design, Cheng Shiu University, achieved great results in international competitions during 2021: five Red Dot Awards in brand and communication design, the Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee special award, and NT$150,000 bonus from the Ministry of Education at the 2021 International Design Competition. President Jui-Chang Kung of Cheng Shiu University indicated that all the university teachers and students take pride in the Department of Visual Communication Design’s repeated success at competitions and recognition from international judges.

The Department of Visual Communication Design, Cheng Shiu University, attracted NT$150,000 bonus from the Ministry of Education at International Design Competition. Meanwhile, the works from the department, i.e., “Liver Nourishing Tea”, “Guei Village – The product of plum in Liou Guei”, “Bless”, “Do you see vision?”, and “Yang Cheng Corner” received five Red Dot Awards for brand and communication designs. The Red Dot Awards, known as the Oscar among design awards, is one of the four major international design competitions. Nearly 7,000 works around the world participated and Taiwan won 164 awards in total this year. The work “Bubble” won the Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee special award.

The creative work “Bubble” was nominated in 2020 for the Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee special award. Fantasy comes in different colors, like bubbles, and it is as vulnerable as bubbles and likely to evaporate. It is necessary to cherish the most beautiful moment to oneself and keep the most wonderful bubbles in the era full of imagination.

The creative work “Guei Village – Plum Products in Liu Guei” introduces the variety of plums and plum products produced in Liu Guei. In addition, a diversity of wildlife lives in the Eighteen Arhats Sanctuary, and it is necessary to draw the public’s attention to such features, in order to develop tourism in the area. The design of the plum products series was based on a combination of the plum element and local wildlife under protection, and the purpose is to introduce Liu Geui and the local species under conservation.

“Yang Cheng Corner” presents the Yancheng District, which was the most prosperous area of Kaohsiung City in its early days. While some traditional and characteristic round houses are still standing on street corners today, many have disappeared due to the changing times. This topic brings the beauty of traditional buildings to the public, in order to turn attention to the problem of these aging and dying old corner houses in Kaohsiung.

“Viewing Angles” is about the change of perspectives to achieve breakthroughs. The lines create a sense of visual depth, while fluorescent orange, gray, and white are the embodiment of enthusiasm for moving forward. The design of the four domains of the Department of Visual Communication Design is based on the principle of visual illusion and represents learning on multiple fronts and the possibility of exploring design from different viewing angles.

Since 2003, the Ministry of Education has been encouraging students to participate in the International Design Competition. The Department of Visual Communication Design, Cheng Shiu University, has been accumulating its experience in international contests and to date, has won 27 first-class awards according to the Ministry of Education’s definition. The award-winning works have been showcased at the Red Dot Design Museum in Germany.

According to Shou-che Wu, Dean of the Office of Arts and Culture and Chair of the Department of Visual Communication Design of Cheng Shiu University, the Department of Visual Communication Design is now in its 12th year. The International Competitor Training Center was established in 2016 to encourage participation in international contests, and winning five Red Dot Awards and a nomination for the Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee special award this year reflect the solid learning achievements of students, the professional and dedicated instruction of teachers, and the acknowledgment of curriculum planning and guidance.
