Special Education “Dream Realization” Giant Project at Cheng Shiu University’s 60th Anniversary: Heartwarming Results with 8 Giants Collaborating with Huashan to Care for the Elderly in the Community

[News Release] In celebration of the University’s 60th anniversary, Cheng Shiu University has taken concrete actions to give back to society by continuously promoting the ‌“Dream Realization Social Service Plan.” Together with the ‌Huashan Social Welfare and Charity Foundation‌, we have jointly established a warm and action-oriented ‌“Cross-Domain Learning Service Alliance.”‌ President Jui-Chang Kung stated that the core spirit of the Dream Realization Social Service Plan is to guide students from ‌“receiving help”‌ to ‌“giving help” to build their confidence and cultivate an attitude of actively caring for society‌ through service experiences.

Today, at the achievement exhibition of ‌“Special Education Dream Realization at Cheng Shiu University’s 60th Anniversary, Caring for the Elderly in the Community”‌ held by the ‌Special Education Resource Center‌ of Cheng Shiu University, Cheng Shiu University officially signed a ‌Memorandum of Cooperation‌ with the ‌Huashan Kaohsiung Regional Station‌, symbolizing a new milestone in the collaboration between education and social welfare. This partnership ensures that learning extends beyond the classroom and deeply touches the community and people’s hearts. ‌Yu-Chao Liao‌, the station manager of the ‌Huashan Siaogang–Cijin Station‌, shared that older adults expressed gratitude for the real-time care and assistance provided by the teachers and students of Cheng Shiu University.

Shun-Yun Lin‌, Dean of Student Affairs, stated that Cheng Shiu University has long been concerned about the ‌diverse development of special education students‌. They have collaborated with the ‌Huashan Social Welfare Foundation since 2016 and have served and cared for ‌more than a thousand elderly individuals living alone over the past seven years‌. This semester, the service points started from ‌Niaosong‌ and gradually extended to ‌Siaogang, Cijin, and Yancheng‌. Students actively engage with the community, learning to understand the living conditions and needs of older adults through companionship, visits, and activity planning, transforming classroom knowledge into concrete action.

Members of the student service team who are participating in the ‌“Dream Realization Social Service Plan”‌ include Chun-Yu Chen from the ‌Department of Information Management‌, Kuan-Yi Ding from the ‌Department of Food and Beverage Management‌, Bo-Yu Chen and Chun-Yi Tu from ‌the Department of Long-term Care and Health Management‌, Shang-Ru Tsai from the ‌Department of Industrial Engineering and Management‌, Hung-Hui Lee from ‌the Department of Early Childhood Care and Education‌, Chun-Fu Wang from ‌the Department of Business Administration, and Su-Ting Lai from ‌the Department of Tourism and Recreation. President Jui-Chang Kung awarded the ‌“Dream Realization Giant”‌ certificate to recognize their outstanding contributions to social service. Chun-Yu Chen shared that by participating in the ‌“Dream Realization Social Service Plan,”‌ students better understand the loneliness and needs of older adults, motivating them to actively care for and accompany their families and friends in the future, avoiding the estrangement of relationships due to time constraints.

Notably, during the ‌“Xia Bai Er”‌ banquet held in ‌Cijin‌, students meticulously planned interactive games and a warm meal, inviting elderly residents who had not gathered for a long time. At the same time, through the ‌“Dream Experiment Workshop”‌ snack charity sale, students donated all proceeds to the community, providing ‌20 rehabilitation pants‌ to elderly residents at ‌Niaosong Station‌. At the achievement exhibition, President Jui-Chang Kung, on behalf of the University, donated ‌NTD 12,000‌ to the ‌Huashan Social Welfare Foundation‌, as activity funds for older adults’ New Year’s Eve dinner, demonstrating the spirit of helping others and the value of social feedback.

Ping-Wei Wu‌, Director of the ‌Special Education Resource Center‌, stated that in this semester, the Dream Realization team personally visited ‌121 households of elderly residents living alone‌ in ‌Kaohsiung‌, delivering ‌“Happy Gift Bags”‌ prepared by students to their doorsteps. Among them, they assisted an elderly resident in Cijin who had become blind due to lung disease by replacing his bed. This has created a safe and comfortable resting space and practically improved his quality of life, implementing love in detail.
