Cheng Shiu University Launches Department of Nursing, Integrating AI and Simulation-Based Teaching while Actively Investing Resources to Foster Professional Talent Development

Following three years of preparation, Cheng Shiu University established its Department of Nursing, officially inaugurated in August 2024. Regarding the newly established Nursing Department, President Rui-Zhang Gong stated that during the establishment of AI and simulation-based teaching, the department has signed agreements with 22 partner institutions to cultivate talent collaboratively. This partnership ensures that the technology and teaching methods align with the current demands of the nursing profession while enhancing students' clinical application skills and promoting the practice and development of technology within nursing.

Recruitment for medical and nursing staff has become increasingly challenging in recent years. Healthcare institutions are even experiencing a significant number of closed beds due to a shortage of nursing personnel. During an interview with “The Complete University Guide,” President Rui-Zhang Gong shared that the establishment of the Department of Nursing has involved significant investments in facilities, faculty, curriculum, and clinical collaborations. Additionally, the University plans to introduce AI and simulation-based teaching, ensuring that future graduates can seamlessly transition into the workforce and meet societal needs.

President Rui-Zhang Gong further noted the challenges encountered during the establishment. Cheng Shiu University submitted its application in full compliance with government regulations and received approval within three years. Regarding the planning process, he noted that the first step was to gain support from the medical and nursing community, followed by recruiting qualified nursing faculty with professional experience and designing high-quality nursing courses. “The establishment of the Department of Nursing marks a new milestone in Cheng Shiu University's 60-year educational history and provides an exceptional learning platform for students aspiring to pursue a nursing career,” the President proclaimed.

Initially founded as an engineering-focused university, Cheng Shiu University also excels in liberal education, providing students with an excellent learning environment in liberal arts and digital technology. President Rui-Zhang Gong emphasized that the Department of Nursing's teaching goal is to cultivate professionals with foundational knowledge, skills, innovative research capabilities, cloud-based nursing information management skills, and the ability to address complex clinical issues. This approach fully leverages the University’s strengths, attracting students who are passionate about nursing to apply.

Nursing Department Chair Yann-Fen Chao noted that Taiwan's healthcare community faces a nursing staff shortage, making it an ideal time to enter the nursing profession. Nursing is a licensure-protected field; the standards of core competencies, knowledge, and skills are clearly defined by the Taiwan Nurses Association and the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Cheng Shiu University has appointed 14 nursing faculty members with doctoral degrees and extensive clinical experience. The number of faculty members will gradually increase based on course requirements. Nursing Department Chair Yann-Fen Chao emphasized that nursing education should not only impart professional skills but also aim to cultivate students' empathy and emotional intelligence, with the goal of nurturing future advanced nursing professionals: “Cheng Shiu University aspires for its graduates to become a tower of strength in the healthcare field, bringing hope to patients and spreading love and care throughout society.”
