Cheng Shiu University (CSU) Nears its 60th Anniversary: President Jui-Chang Kung Reflects on His Journey of Running the School and Shares His Vision for the Future

Cheng Shiu University (CSU) is approaching the 60th anniversary of its founding. Over the past six decades, the University has nurtured thousands of outstanding students each year. Alumni excel in various industries and make significant contributions to society. CSU's educational achievements have garnered widespread recognition. The University successfully secured the highest subsidy of 240 million NTD among private technical and vocational universities in the second phase, the first stage of the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Sprout Project (2024), in June of this year. This demonstrates CSU’s excellent educational outcomes and promising future potential.
In an interview with Du Wei, host of the “Southern Voices” podcast, President Kung shared the challenges he has faced and his personal journey since assuming the role of school president. President Kung stated that he faced several challenges and setbacks at that time: changes in education policies and environment, intense competition among universities, declining birth rates, and pressure from the Ministry of Education's evaluations. To cope with these challenges, President Kung emphasized the importance of maintaining physical and mental health and developing a regular exercise routine to alleviate stress. President Kung pointed out that having a strong team for support is a key factor in overcoming various challenges.
“Whenever faced with critical decision-making moments, I always listen to the team's advice and consider various opinions before making decisions. This approach helps mitigate the risks associated with relying solely on individual judgment,” stated President Kung. When CSU first faced the declining birth rate trend, it considered developing a second campus but ultimately decided not to. In hindsight, this decision proved to be the wisest at the time.
Although declining birth rates pose significant challenges to university admissions, CSU has maintained an enrollment of over 15,000 students. President Jui-Chang Kung noted that the University has always emphasized character education and professional skills; its motto “Rectifying the Mind, Cultivating the Self” embodies the spirit passed down since its inception. During CSU's academic transformation, the University upgraded from a junior college to an institute of technology, focusing on faculty development, improvement, and industry collaboration. These initiatives have contributed to the University’s stable growth and development.
This year, CSU established the Departments of Nursing and Long-term Care and Health Management, focusing on cultivating mid-to-senior management talent. President Kung noted that establishing these new departments is a proactive response to Taiwan’s aging society and changes in the job market. Through industry collaboration, CSU helps students transition smoothly into the workforce, with graduates presented with multiple job opportunities.
Founded in 1964, Cheng Shiu University (CSU) is a higher education institution focused on technical and vocational education. President Kung emphasized that over the past 60 years, the school has consistently adhered to a practical-orientation, student-centered teaching philosophy while achieving outstanding results in various fields. The year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of CSU’s founding. Under President Jui-Chang Kung’s leadership, the university will continue to uphold its educational philosophy of “Practice-Based, Service to Society.” The University remains dedicated to cultivating professionals to meet industry demands while expanding its influence in technical and vocational education. This insightful interview will be featured in CSU’s Excellence Podcast.
