Global Views Monthly Interviews with President Kung on Cultivation of International Talents Largest Number of Students in Cheng Shiu’s Industry-Academia Special Class of Overseas Students

Under the impact of low birth rate, all colleges and universities have made every effort to strive for recruiting international students, and it has become the favorite of enterprises to strengthen the international competitiveness of Taiwan students. Jui-Chang Kung, President of Cheng Shiu University, said in an interview with Global Views Monthly that the number of foreign students in Cheng Shiu is more than 1,300, ranking high in Taiwan. Graduates must possess multiple professional knowledge and skills in order to be favored by enterprises.

Chien-Hsin Lee, editor-in-chief of Global Views Monthly, led a team to visit Cheng Shiu University and President Jui-Chang Kung talked about "how can universities become outposts for nurturing international talents". Jui-Chang Kung pointed out that over the past decade, the number of people born in Taiwan has been reduced by 110,000, and the number of students studying in Cheng Shiu has been maintained at 17,000, mainly through diversified admission channels and internationalization, setting up international classes for Industry-Academia links, plus classes for overseas Chinese students, and actively striving for the enrollment of foreign students. The most important thing is, excellent school performance and ranking among the best in appraisal, which attracts high/vocational schools to seek cooperation.

He said that Cheng Shiu University began to be internationalized as early as 40 years ago, by first exchanging with foreign schools, and then conducting a two-month homestay to promote the friendship between domestic and foreign students, which all have achieved good effects.

Cheng Shiu University will also conduct the "Ten Million Overseas Apprenticeship Program" since 2025 for students to stay as interns in Japan, South Korea and Thailand for five days. As long as you are studying in graduate school in Cheng Shiu, you will have the opportunity to go to Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries to experience local customs. This is to attract the university graduates to continue to study in graduate school.

Principal Jui-Chang Kung said that the main form of enrollment for overseas Chinese or international students is the special class, and the number of students in the special industry-academia class for overseas Chinese students is the largest. In the year 2017, the enrollment for the 3+4 special industry-academia class for overseas Chinese students officially began. It has been cooperating with 9 higher vocational schools and10 departments to open the special industry-academia class for overseas Chinese students. The number of students is nearly 1,000 now.

He also said that since August last year, Cheng Shiu University has been assigned to serve as the general enrollment school of the International Alliance for Industry-Academia Education Cooperation-Indonesia Overseas Base Program and the deputy general enrollment school of the Philippine Overseas Base Program to assist universities and colleges across Taiwan in recruiting foreign students and offering Chinese language courses.

Cheng Shiu University has won high praise for taking care of foreign students. All foreign students have been accepted to work in Taiwan in their original internship or work-study institutions, and the proportion of working or further studying in Taiwan is more than 65%.

Apart from a single field, students need to be "T-shaped talents" with a little knowledge of other areas, that is, only people with multiple professional knowledge or skills can be favored by enterprises, he said.

On the advice for new college students, he said that majors are very important, while service attitude and workplace ethics are more important than majors. They should adopt a lifelong learning mentality in order to achieve success in the workplace.
