Bachelor Program of Medical Engineering

Introduction

     Due to the aging population society as a global trend, a great profit has been made by the bio-medical industry around the world, and the positive promotion from the government which strengthens the development of biotechnology medical service market; these phenomena create huge demands for the professions in the domestic and foreign medicine mechanical and electrical industry. Moreover, the school has received related research project grants NT $9,000,000 and NT $17,500,000 from National Science Council in 2008 and 2010, and for a long time the school has built up a collaboration system for research and teaching with Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Kaohsiung Medical University. Therefore, in order to create a high quality conformity foundation and environment for the integration of the teaching and learning achievements, Bachelor Program of Medical Engineering was found for purpose to keep abreast with the global trend of industrialization and automation in bio-industry.

     The program is four-year undergraduate and aims to develop the featured courses which integrate research and practice teaching as its goal, to cultivate professions who are with the community responsibility, the humanities concern, the highly professional skills—to fit the demands of the medical mechanical and electrical industrial development. The program also sets the goals to train students to engage in related abilities and skills in medical instrument, product design, manufacture, analysis, examination and maintenance, with the related knowledge of precise manufacture, production automation, mechanical and electrical integration technology and energy management. In addition, to cope with the key industrial developmental directions and the area industrial developmental tendency of the nation, the program hopes to cultivate students to be professions in the field of medical engineering. Through the integrated learning of the knowledge, technology, and techniques, the program raises the students’ abilities for self-study, team cooperation, and independence and innovation.

Features

     The major features of Bachelor Program of Medical Engineering are listed as follows:

  1. Cross domain integration of medical science, mechanical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, etc., are the objective of this program.
  2. Medical device development, assistive technology, and medical mechatronics integration are the three major developing directions.
  3.  Direct links with Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung Ho Memorial Hospital, Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital, Lujhu Science Park Kaohsiung Medical Device Special Zone are essential for the course is to be truly applied and can get some clinical experience easily.

Curriculum

     The undergraduate program aims to cultivate the medical mechanicians/ technicians and electrical engineers with the highly professional skills and professional ethics as a goal. The program recruits one class this year, and the curriculum design focuses on four domains for students to choose. This program consists of 134 credits in four years, and the program features includes:

  1. Medical Technology Domain: The advanced medical technology, the medical technological design, the analysis, the manufacture are major in the course, auxiliary by the biological mechanics, the biological technology, the alternative processing, recovery construction, automatic control development. Moreover, the course also integrates the application of the medical mechanism and electronics, the medical micro creative applications of techniques, medical precise measurement, functional electricity stimulation, to achieve the goal of fostering the professions at higher-level medical technology.
  2. Medical mechanical and electrical domain: To integrate the medical mechanical and electronics, the design, the analysis as major in the course, the domain is auxiliary by the precise measurement, medical instrument, biotic control, CAD/CAM development. Moreover, the course also integrates the medical digital signal processing, the digital image processing, the sensory theory and application, the speedy formation processing, the application of medical supersonic wave, to achieve the goal of fostering the professions at higher-level medical mechanical and electrical technology.
  3. Medical Material Domain: The medical material mechanics, the medical material science and the experiment are major in the course, auxiliary by medical equipment quality authentication, computer integration manufacture, medicine quality control development. Moreover, the course also integrates the bio-medical applications of technical material processing, the medicine mechanical and electronics, CAD/CAM, to achieve the goal of fostering the professions at higher-level medical material industry.
  4. Medical Management and Innovation Domain: The medical engineering management and the creativity training are major in the course, auxiliary by the biological statistics, medical mechanical and electrical industry analysis, and medical service quality control development. Moreover, the course also integrates medical equipment quality authentication, medical information management, medical mechanical and electronics, to achieve the goal of fostering the professions at higher-level medical management.

Faculty

    The program now includes thirty full-time faculty members, including one course professor, seven professors, ten associate professors, seven assistant professors, and five adjunct medical doctors. The faculty is strong since the program integrates the resource of Chang Kung Medical teaching and learning development center, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung Ho Memorial Hospital, and Lujhu Science Park Kaohsiung Medical Device Special Zone nearby.

Facilities

    The program takes the medical supplies development, the mechanical and electrical integration and biological mechanics as the technological development core; therefore, the featured laboratories mainly include: the medical mechanical and electrical laboratory, the biological mechanics laboratory, the SEM electron microscope laboratory, the design conformity manufacturing center, the reverse-engineering laboratory, three-dimensions examination laboratory, the medical CA/CAM laboratory, X-Ray to examination laboratory and so on.
